TAY BASINThe Tay Basin is a multi-use area serving as a destination for boaters and an events. Boaters with small boats can drive directly to the basin and larger boats can park at Last Duel Park and walk to town.
BIG BEN PARKIan Miller is a Perth hometown hero having competed in 9 Oympic Games, the most recent being the 2008 Summer Games where he won a silver medal. Come and see the towns newest attaction, Big Ben Park which is located along the Tay River in Code Park.
STEWART PARKStewart Park is centrally located directly behind the Perth Town Hall. It is the showpeice of the town of Perth providing recreational opportunities for visitors and Perth residents. Enjoy a quite stroll through the well treed grounds, have a picnic by the Tay river that winds through the grounds or have a swim in the river. It is the home of the Stewart Park Festival held every July featuring world class musical entertainment and the Perth Citizens Band that holds concerts every week in the bandshell behind town hall.
PERTH TOWN HALLThe Perth Town Hall is the seat of municipal government. Built is 1862 it has undergone numerous renovations over the years but remains an excellent example of Italianate style architecture, typical of British Public Administrative buildings of the era. CRYSTAL PALACEThe Crystal Palace is located in the Tay Basin on the shore of the Tay River directly across from Town Hall. It is an impressive structure built from the dissassembled pedestrian cover on Rideau Street in ottawa. The parts were shipped to Perth and reassembled at the present location. It serves as the home to the Perth Farmers Market, Stewart Park Festival After Hours venue, Festival of Good Cheer and various private and public functions throughout the year. It is also the home of public washrooms facilities
MAMMOTH CHEESESeveral Perth cheese makers were invited to make a giant cheese for the 1893 Worlds Fair in chicago. They made a cheese from the mik of 10, 000 cows which ended up weighing 22,000 pounds and was 6 feet high and had a circumference of 28 feet. Afer being housed over the winter of 1892 it left on a special freight car in April 1893. It was a major attraction along its route being signed by 10, 000 people along the way. After crashing through the floor at the fair a special concrete room was built to accommodate it. The cheese was the most popular exhibit at the fair and received the bronze medal. A newly constructed replica can be found in the tay Basin beside the Crystal Palace.
RIDEAU TRAILThe Rideau Trail is a 385 km trail that follows the historic Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa. It is a popular recreational destination that goes through many towns and cities along it's route. the trail goes through the centre of Perth from Conlon Farm at the south, through Stewart Park and the Tay Basin eventually winding along the Tay River to Beveridges Locks. The trail is marked by orange triangular signs through town and takes hikers through the most scenic areas of town. For more trail information click here.
PERTH FARMERS MARKETHeld every Saturday from May to October the Perth Farmers Market features locally grown and produced goods. It is open from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Crytal Palace in the Tay basin. Come and enjoy live music and a wide variety of unique products including:
TAY RIVERThe Tay river flows right through the centre of Perth rendering the area encompassed by the Town Hall and Stewart Park and island. The river originates in Bob"s Lake to the west of Perth and eventually empties into the Rideau Canal at Beveridges Locks which have a combined drop of 25 feet to the river. The Tay Basin offers boaters a place to moore and explore town although most have to dock at Last Duel Park due to low bridges. The river offrs many beautiful vistas around town.
